Understand your eTA before you fly.

A little preparation goes a long way. Find out whether your passport needs an electronic travel authorisation, what to have ready and how the decision reaches you.

Apply for my eTA

    Canada eTA, explained simply

An eTA is a digital permission to travel to Canada by air for eligible visitors who do not need a visa. At check-in, the airline verifies it against the passport you present.

You submit passport information and answer personal and background questions online. Canada’s immigration authorities review the request; EntryHop does not make approval decisions.

    A holiday

Explore Canada or visit friends and family.

    A business visit

Attend meetings or conferences, subject to visitor rules.

    A short course

Some courses of up to six months qualify; study-permit rules still apply.

    An airport connection

An eTA may also be needed when changing flights in Canada.

    A mountain lake in Canada

One passport. More than one visit.

An approval can cover several trips over a maximum of five years. If your passport expires sooner, your authorisation ends with it. Renewing your passport means applying again.

A border officer sets the permitted length of each visit, commonly up to six months. An eTA lets you travel to the border; it does not promise entry.

The approval is electronic, so there is no eTA document to print. Bring the exact passport used for your application.

A clear view of the costs

Applying directly to the Canadian government costs CAD $7. EntryHop assistance starts from USD $89 per traveller and includes that government fee — the full amount is shown before you pay.

This guide is not an individual eligibility decision. Special passport conditions apply to British nationals, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Romania. Some visa-required travellers may qualify under additional conditions.

Check the traveller, not just the trip

Each eligible passenger needs their own authorisation, including babies and children. A parent or guardian can complete a child’s application.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents, U.S. citizens and U.S. lawful permanent residents are exempt. Travellers with a valid Canadian visa do not also need an eTA.

Rules depend on nationality, passport type and how you enter Canada. If your situation is unusual, confirm it on the government website.

    Four things to have ready

Gather these before you start, so you can complete the details carefully.

    From preparation to decision

A straightforward process, with the final assessment always made by Canada.

    01

    Check your eligibility

Confirm that an eTA is right for your passport and arrival method before starting.

    02

    Enter and review your details

Match your passport exactly, answer the required questions and review the fees before payment.

    03

    Look out for the email

The government sends its decision or asks for more information. Approval is connected to your passport.

    Allow time before departure

    When to get started

Many applications are decided quickly, but a request for documents can mean a wait of several days. Do not rely on a last-minute approval.

The Canadian government recommends applying before booking your flight. You do not need to wait until the day of travel.

What can lead to a longer review?

    • Extra checks

Authorities may need supporting documents or a closer review of your answers.

    • Details that do not match

An incorrect passport number or inconsistent information can interrupt processing.

    • A request in your inbox

Check your email regularly and follow any instructions within the stated deadline.

    What happens after the email?

The decision comes from Canadian immigration authorities. Read the message carefully, including any instructions or conditions.

    If approved

Travel with your application passport. Your airline can verify the authorisation digitally; no printed eTA is required.

    If more action is needed

Follow the decision email. Depending on the reason, you may need to provide documents, submit a corrected request or explore a visitor visa.

    Your application, in three stages

Prepare, review and receive the government’s response.
